Pakicetus was a very good example of a transitional fossil; this animal had the ability to wade in shallow water and hear underwater, but Pakicetus wasn't too strong of a swimmer, so he must have lived on land. Pakicetus is one of the earliest known cetaceans, and he begins the gradual change from whales being land mammals, to aquatic mammals.
